KSEB Implements 1 Paise Per Unit Fuel Surcharge for May Billing Cycle.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced the imposition of a fuel surcharge of 1 paise per unit for all monthly and bimonthly billed consumers in May. This surcharge is introduced in response to increased expenses linked to power purchases influenced by fluctuating fuel costs at thermal generating stations during March. The board aims to recover an estimated ₹1.58 crore incurred in March as a result of these adjustments.

This surcharge is not applicable to all consumer categories; it specifically excludes domestic consumers whose connected load is below 1000 watts and those with a monthly consumption of less than 40 units. Additionally, consumers subscribing to the green tariff are also exempt from this surcharge. This strategic decision by KSEB reflects a targeted approach to manage the financial implications of rising fuel costs while protecting lower consumption households from added financial burdens.

Consumers are encouraged to review their usage patterns and the potential impact of this surcharge on their electricity bills. By imposing this minimal charge of 1 paise per unit, KSEB seeks to ensure the sustainability of power supply in the state while balancing the financial realities of electricity procurement. The board emphasizes its commitment to transparent pricing and efficient resource management, reaffirming its role in maintaining the stability of Kerala’s power sector amidst volatile fuel costs.
