Stock Market Closure Alert: Are NSE, BSE, and MCX Open or Closed Today, May 1, for Maharashtra Day and Labour Day?

The domestic stock exchanges National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading today in observance of the Maharashtra Day holiday. Concurrently, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will halt trading during the morning session but is set to resume operations in the evening from 5 pm to 11:30 pm. Meanwhile, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), the country’s largest agricultural commodity exchange, will be closed throughout both trading sessions today. Trading for NCDEX is expected to recommence on Wednesday, April 15.

In addition to the domestic market closures, numerous global exchanges are also suspending trading in observance of International Labour Day. Major markets in Asia, including China, Singapore, and Hong Kong, will be non-operational, while key European exchanges in France, Germany, and Spain follow suit. Conversely, stock markets in the United Kingdom and the United States will remain open and will operate during the usual trading hours, highlighting a divergence in trading activities across different regions on this holiday.

The holiday calendar for trading in 2026 includes several important dates, with the next upcoming market holiday on May 28 for Bakri Eid. Distinct from previous years, the circular this time conspicuously lacks mention of a holiday for Diwali due to it falling on a weekend. Notably, Muhurat Trading is planned for Sunday, November 08, 2026, with timings to be announced later. It is important for traders and investors to stay informed, as the exchanges may revise the holiday schedule, necessitating advance communications through separate circulars.
