Revolutionizing the Seafood Industry: A Call to Enhance Sustainable Refrigeration Technologies for a Greener Future

The recent workshop held under the INDEE3 Project, organized by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, highlighted the importance of adopting energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable refrigeration technologies in the seafood processing sector. Kerala Fisheries Minister V. E. Abdul Gafoor emphasized the necessity of innovative cold-chain technologies to enhance product quality, improve exports, and reduce post-harvest losses, ensuring that Kerala maintains its status as a leading seafood producer and exporter in India. The integration of natural refrigerants, such as carbon dioxide and ammonia, was strongly endorsed by experts at the event, underlining a shift towards climate-friendly practices in the seafood industry.

This initiative is significant for the common citizen as it directly affects the quality of seafood available in the market and can lead to more competitive pricing due to reduced post-harvest losses. For the seafood processing industry, adopting these advanced refrigeration technologies could enhance productivity and open new export markets, ultimately benefiting the economic landscape of the region. Furthermore, by shifting to more sustainable practices, environmental impact is reduced, supporting not just the local ecosystem, but also aligning with global sustainability trends which may influence consumer preferences and international trade.

In terms of long-term policy outlook, the commitment to integrate energy-efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration technologies is likely to streamline operations within the seafood sector, thereby enhancing resilience against climate-related challenges. The government, along with the RBI, could look into providing incentives for seafood exporters to adopt such technologies, alongside potential funding avenues for research and development in this space. Policymakers are expected to continue facilitating dialogue among key stakeholders, including industry leaders and research institutions, to foster innovation and ensure that Kerala’s seafood industry not only remains competitive but also leads in sustainable practices.
