Reddit Stock Soars 14% Following S&P 500 Inclusion, Ushering Out AvalonBay

The recent announcement by S&P Dow Jones Indices regarding Reddit’s inclusion in the S&P 500 has triggered a significant market response, with shares surging more than 14% on Friday. Following this development, JP Morgan analysts estimate that index funds will be required to acquire approximately 16.7 million Reddit shares, a figure that is nearly triple the average daily trading volume of about 5.98 million shares since the company’s public debut in March 2024. This influx of demand may put upward pressure on the stock price in the short term, as the trading activity significantly exceeds historical norms.

As of Friday, Reddit shares traded at $180.38, with transaction volumes exceeding 10 million. Although this rally appears notable, it is essential to contextualize it within the broader performance of the stock. Notably, Reddit shares have experienced a decline of more than 31% year-to-date as of Thursday’s market close, and they remain over 42% off their all-time high reached in September 2025. This underperformance highlights a critical point; while the announcement of inclusion in the S&P 500 might provide a temporary boost, it does not negate the challenges Reddit faces in user growth and revenue potential, particularly given its recent earnings report citing a downturn in U.S. user metrics attributed to volatile search-engine traffic.

Furthermore, the impending changes to the S&P 500, which will take effect before market opening on August 18, are noteworthy. AvalonBay Communities will be replaced by Reddit, following AvalonBay’s agreement to merge with Equity Residential, positioning the new entity, Vivmark Residential, within the index. Historically, stocks added to the S&P 500 tend to experience marked initial performance gains, as noted by analyst Melissa Roberts. However, it is crucial to approach with caution, as these stocks have typically underperformed the index by about 2% over the subsequent three months after their inclusion. Investors should, therefore, not only consider the potential immediate impacts of this announcement but also assess the medium-term sustainability of Reddit’s share price in light of its recent performance metrics.
