Ladakh Celebrates Historic First Export of Apricots to UAE!
On July 15, 2026, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the commencement of apricot exports from Ladakh to the United Arab Emirates, marking a pivotal moment for local farmers and horticulture. A consignment of five metric tonnes of Raktsey apricots was flagged off, thanks to an agreement with UAE-based Lulu Group, which anticipates exporting over 1,000 metric tonnes this season, contrasting sharply with the mere 1,500 kg exported in the prior two years. This initiative aims to position Ladakh’s apricots more prominently in international markets, recognizing the unique agricultural advantages the region possesses.
This export venture is set to significantly impact local farmers and the market. By tapping into international demand, it is expected that farmers will receive better prices for their produce, leading to enhanced income and improved living standards. The involvement of exporters to manage the entire logistics chain—from harvesting to marketing—frees farmers from operational burdens, thus encouraging greater participation in the export economy. The establishment of a dedicated control room for monitoring produce movement further reflects the administration’s commitment to streamline these operations.
Looking ahead, the Ladakh administration is taking steps to strengthen its horticultural framework. Plans are underway to establish a world-class apricot processing unit within a year, addressing current challenges such as the short shelf life of the fruit and facilitating smoother exports. Such efforts are critical not only for ensuring consistent quality but also for fostering sustainable agricultural practices in the region. Continued partnership with stakeholders like the Lulu Group and support from agencies like APEDA and CONCOR are vital for realizing these goals, providing a robust foundation for potential growth in Ladakh’s agricultural exports.
