Critical Stock Shortages Plague Nearly Half of Domestic Coal-Based Power Plants
Recent data reveals a concerning decline in coal stocks at domestic coal-based (DCB) power plants, with nearly half reporting critically low inventories. As of October 25, 85 of the 176 DCB plants, with a combined 207 GW capacity, are operating with coal stocks below the 25% normative requirement. This figure reflects a rise from 81 plants just ten days prior, highlighting a troubling trend in the coal supply landscape. Additionally, the number of critical stocks within imported coal-based (ICB) plants has remained static, but their total inventories also show declines from previous months.
Driving this significant reduction in coal stock levels are factors such as a 3.2% year-on-year decline in domestic coal production, primarily attributed to lower output from Coal India, amid a backdrop of burgeoning electricity demand. In the first ten days of October, electricity demand surged 23.4% year-on-year, propelled by higher temperatures and persistent cooling needs in addition to robust industrial activity. These supply-side pressures, combined with substantial demand, are straining the available coal stocks, which currently serve as a thin buffer against potential supply disruptions.
Traders and investors should remain vigilant as the ongoing decrease in inventory levels may lead to price volatility in the coal market. A sustained recovery in coal production is crucial to replenish stocks and effectively meet peak demand, which is expected to continue growing. In the short term, the market will likely experience upward pressure on coal prices if inventories do not recover swiftly, making strategic trading decisions paramount in this tightening supply environment.

The decline in coal inventories at power plants points to increasing supply constraints that could lead to price spikes. Retail investors should consider this volatility and potentially adjust their portfolios to hedge against rising coal prices in the near term.
