Elephant Rampage in Thrissur Sparks Investigation and Assurance of Compensation for Affected Residents
District Collector Shikha Surendran has initiated an urgent investigation into the recent rampage of an elephant in Thrissur, assigning the Divisional Forest Officer and Assistant Conservator of Forest to swiftly compile reports on the incident. Given the elephant’s movement, tranquillization was deemed impracticable at the time. The tahsildar and village officer are tasked with promptly assessing damage to vehicles and property caused by the animal’s encounter with residents.
The wild elephant, belonging to Sivadath from Thiruvananthapuram, has insurance coverage, and officials have guaranteed that compensation will be provided to all individuals affected by the rampage. The investigation will focus on possible legal violations as indicated by the findings of the Forest department, ensuring accountability and regulatory compliance in such incidents.
In Peringavu village, reported damages include five scooters and a car, along with damage to the compound walls of five houses. Within Thrissur village limits, structural damage to a post office building, a car, an autorickshaw, and parts of the Town Hall fencing was also noted. An emergency review meeting has been convened to accelerate the response process and ensure all affected parties are duly compensated and assisted.
