Can Gaja Alternative Asset Management’s IPO Fuel Sustained Growth for Risk-Tolerant Investors?

Gaja Alternative Asset Management has announced its plans for an initial public offering (IPO), aiming to raise ₹450 crore through a fresh issue to support its investments and repay existing loans, alongside an additional ₹100 crore through an offer for sale. Following this IPO, the promoter stake will decrease from 71% to 54%. The company boasts a solid average multiple on invested capital (MOIC) of 3.3 times across its previous investments, indicating effective management and potential positive returns. However, it is noteworthy that the earnings are closely tied to fund performance and exposed to regulatory risks. This lens suggests that long-term investors with a higher risk tolerance may find this IPO appealing.

Gaja Capital, established in 1999, diversifies its investments across various sectors, including education, energy, financial services, and technology, focusing on mid-market opportunities within the ₹50-250 crore range. It has garnered interest from investors across 20 countries, enhancing its global investment appeal. Despite its past success, the mixed revenue model—a combination of management fees, carried interest, and sponsor commitments—demands cautious consideration, as any underperformance in investments could directly impact income from carried interest, which constituted nearly 48% of total income in FY26. The Indian alternative investment market is projected to experience significant growth, further emphasizing the critical positioning of Gaja Capital in this expanding landscape.

Financial highlights show a healthy uptick in revenue and net profit where revenue rose to ₹158 crore in FY26 from ₹104 crore in FY24, reflecting a net profit increase to ₹82 crore in FY26. The net margin also improved from 43% to 52%, showcasing operational efficiency. Gaja’s IPO’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 27.5 times positions it competitively when compared with the 25-40 times range of other asset management firms. As the first standalone private equity firm to list in India, Gaja’s IPO could set a new precedent in the market, thus capturing the attention of investors looking for innovative opportunities within the financial sector.
