Experts Advocate for Fortified Rice as a Vital Solution to Enhance Nutritional Intake for Families.

Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized the importance of consuming fortified rice to enhance nutrition and immunity for families. Speaking at an industry workshop focused on the benefits of fortified rice, Rao acknowledged the cultural significance of rice and wheat in Indian cuisine while advocating for the inclusion of fortified rice, particularly given the rising prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. He pointed out that approximately 35 to 40 million tonnes of rice are fortified with essential nutrients under the Public Distribution System, benefiting over 800 million individuals, primarily pregnant women and malnourished children.

Usharani Dandamundi, a food scientist from CSIR-CFTRI, highlighted the widespread issue of nutrient insecurity in India, stating that about 60% of the population suffers from “hidden hunger.” She cautioned against the consumption of overly polished rice, which often lacks vital nutrients like iron and vitamins A and B12, contributing to health issues among many Indians. Dandamundi also shared insights into the CSIR-CFTRI’s efforts in fortification technology, noting that while fortified rice is a significant dietary supplement, it should not replace a balanced diet.

Industry representatives underscored the transformative potential of fortified staples in addressing public health challenges. Jumbulingappa Hosmani from Panchamrutha Industries cited alarming statistics regarding anemia among vulnerable populations as outlined in the National Family Health Survey. As fortified rice gains popularity, particularly in states like Goa, it presents an opportunity for improving nutrition security on a large scale. Abhishek Shukla from Millers for Nutrition indicated that rice could be a pivotal vehicle for delivering enhanced nutrition, thereby reinforcing the coalition’s goal of tackling malnutrition through extensive food fortification efforts across multiple countries.
