UK to Increase Duty-Free Steel Quota for India in Bid to Resolve Trade Dispute.

The UK has agreed to grant India enhanced tariff-free imports of steel through country-specific and residual steel import quotas, alongside access to its Authorised Use Scheme (AUS). This agreement marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing bilateral free trade negotiations, effectively shielding Indian steel trade from potential disruptions amid the UK’s new steel safeguard measures set to take effect on July 1, 2026. Approximately 15% of India’s steel exports to the UK, valued at around $137 million annually, may still be affected, while the remaining 85% of the total $1 billion export volume remains largely unimpeded by these safeguards.

This development is crucial for common citizens, particularly in India’s steel producing regions, as it helps maintain employment stability and safeguards revenue in the time leading up to the new regulations. For the market, it boosts investor confidence and can mitigate fluctuations in steel prices associated with potential supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, the resolution of these trade barriers can foster sustained trade relations, bolstering economic interactions between India and the UK and supporting domestic production capacities in the steel sector.

In terms of long-term implications, this agreement allows the Government of India to negotiate with a degree of stability, although challenges remain with the impending implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) expected in 2027. Discussions will need to advance regarding the potential impacts of the CBAM on both protected and unprotected portions of steel exports. As India prepares for the July 2025 comprehensive economic and trade agreement’s implementation, addressing the concerns of the MSME sector regarding specific steel products will be vital in ensuring sustainable growth and trade resilience moving forward.
