New Closing Auction Session for Equity Cash Segment Now in Effect!

The recent implementation of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) in the equity cash segment marks a significant evolution in India’s market structure, enhancing price discovery and aligning the country with global practices. Under this new framework introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), eligible cash market stocks linked with derivatives will transition from the traditional volume-weighted average price (VWAP) methodology to an auction-based mechanism for determining closing prices. The CAS operates from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM, post continuous trading, and is designed to aggregate buy and sell orders, thereby improving liquidity, particularly for large institutional trades.

The CAS is structured as a 20-minute session featuring distinct phases: an order entry period, a limit-order-only phase, and a dynamic order matching process. This framework aims to enhance execution efficiency for large orders while supporting more accurate settlement of derivatives and indices. The reference price for the auction will rely on the VWAP calculated during the preceding 15 minutes of trading, and a price band of +/- 3% will be enforced to mitigate excessive volatility. Notably, market orders will be prioritized over limit orders, and any unexecuted limit orders from continuous trading will be carried forward to CAS, with specific restrictions on certain order types.

This transformation in closing price methodology has immediate implications for market stability and efficiency, as evidenced by Monday’s trading results where major indices experienced significant upward movement. The BSE Sensex rose by 544.39 points (0.70%) to close at 78,639.03, while the NSE Nifty gained 390.70 points (1.60%), concluding at 24,774.30. Such gains indicate a concentrated liquidity effect during the final trading minutes, potentially leading to more pronounced shifts in stock prices driven by large institutional orders as they become aggregated during the CAS.
