West Bengal CM Confronts Darjeeling Leaders, Vows to Tackle GTA Corruption Head-On.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced plans to seek benefits from the Pradhan Mantri Cha Shramik Protsahan Yojana (PMCSPY), a scheme overlooked by the previous government. During a meeting with leaders from the Darjeeling hills, he emphasized the need for immediate action in light of the ongoing corruption issues within the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). The Chief Minister criticized the management of funds allocated to the region, noting that substantial amounts have gone unutilized, hindering civic services for local residents.
Mr. Adhikari addressed the investigation into a teacher recruitment scam, stating that the State Government will withdraw its appeal in the Supreme Court to facilitate a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry. He described this as a necessary step to restore accountability in recruitment processes. Highlighting the financial allocations made for the hills, he indicated that funds of ₹180 crore for the last financial year and ₹170 crore for the current year had not been effectively employed under the current GTA administration, which is associated with the Trinamool Congress.
As preparations for the upcoming monsoon season ramp up, the Chief Minister has directed prompt actions regarding disaster management and requested a report on the situation in the hills within ten days. He criticized the former government’s delayed response to last year’s floods and underscored the need for a proactive approach. By engaging with the tea industry and utilizing central support, Mr. Adhikari aims to bolster economic opportunities for tea workers, who have been significantly affected by the closure of major tea gardens in the region.
