Water Metro Service Set to Launch in Mumbai Metropolitan Region by 2028, Announces Nitesh Rane
Water Metro services will soon connect Nariman Point, Versova, and Bandra by 2028, as announced by Maharashtra Minister for Fisheries and Ports Development Nitesh Rane during The Hindu’s ‘Maharashtra Infrastructure Conclave 2026’. The initiative aims to enhance public transport through inland waterways, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) finalised and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed. Plans include 250 electric boats running across six to eight routes with 21 to 22 stations, inspired by successful water transport systems in Sweden and the Netherlands.
Rane emphasized the significance of the maritime sector in contributing to India’s economic goals, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s $5-trillion economy vision. With the shipbuilding and ship-repair industry currently underdeveloped, he noted discussions with international companies, such as Candela from Sweden and various Norwegian operators, to introduce electric boat services. The government plans to transition traditional diesel boats to electric, supported by financial aid for operators.
Highlighting the Vadhvan Port project as transformative, Rane stated that it would create skill development opportunities and local employment. He also addressed concerns at Sasoon Dockyard, mentioning international cooperation to assist fishing communities. The government’s Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, aimed at fisheries development, has significantly increased its budget to ₹1,000 crore, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the local fishing industry and addressing community needs.
