Tragedy Strikes in Odisha: Workers Die from Suspected Asphyxiation Inside Under-Construction Septic Tank in Kalahandi

At least six individuals reportedly died from suspected asphyxiation while attempting to rescue a builder who fell into an under-construction septic tank in Kalahandi district, Odisha. The incident occurred at Gauda Karlakhunta village, where the victims included three masons, a laborer, the builder, and his son. Following the incident, the victims were taken to the Madanpur Rampur Community Health Centre, where they were pronounced dead.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep condolences and announced a financial assistance package of ₹4 lakh for each family of the deceased. Kalahandi Collector Sachin Pawer confirmed that the district administration has provided ₹30,000 to each family for last rites. This tragic event has drawn attention to safety measures in construction practices within the state.

Odisha Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan emphasized that the state government is committed to implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact cause of the deaths, highlighting the need for stringent safety protocols in construction sites to avoid similar tragedies moving forward.
