Telangana Achieves Milestone with Over 10 Lakh Tonnes of Paddy Procured!
The Telangana government has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural procurement process by surpassing the 10-lakh tonne mark for paddy procurement in the 2025-26 rabi season. With a target set to procure 90 lakh tonnes of paddy, the state has already procured 4.50 lakh tonnes of fine variety, while the remainder consists of coarse varieties. To support this effort, the government has released ₹500.20 crore for payments under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) operations. The overall agricultural area devoted to paddy cultivation stands at 22.25 lakh hectares, and Telangana anticipates a record production of 1.52 crore tonnes this season.
For the common citizen, this procurement initiative is a positive development, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation through the MSP system, which is designed to protect them from market volatility. The efficient handling of paddy inflows through 8,575 Paddy Purchase Centres (PPCs) reflects the government’s commitment to minimize bottlenecks and streamline operations. This not only enhances market stability but also secures food supply for the broader population, thereby contributing to food inflation management. The targeted procurement of both fine and coarse rice is likely to keep prices stable in the local markets.
In terms of long-term economic implications, the government’s proactive measures to enhance storage capacity with a provision for 32 lakh tonnes of godown space, combined with strategic operations at PPCs, are steps towards ensuring food security. The unveiling of stringent measures, such as monitoring check-posts to curb unauthorized procurement activities, indicates a comprehensive approach to maintaining the integrity of the procurement process. Moving forward, stakeholders may expect continued investment in agricultural infrastructure and potential policy enhancements to further bolster farmers’ incomes and support sustainable agricultural practices in the state.
