Surging Tomato, Onion, and Potato Prices Drive Up July Veg Thali Costs

The Crisil Roti Rice Rate report indicates that the average cost of a vegetarian thali in July has increased by 4 percent month-on-month to ₹28.1, driven primarily by a 31 percent surge in tomato prices due to seasonal supply constraints. However, on a year-on-year basis, the cost is 14 percent lower than in July 2025, reflecting a significant moderation in food prices from the elevated levels witnessed during that period. Non-vegetarian thalis also saw a decline of 2 percent from the previous month, while remaining 13 percent cheaper compared to last year, thanks to lower broiler chicken prices which make up a significant portion of the overall cost.

This rise in thali costs month-on-month may concern common citizens as it signals renewed pressure on household food budgets, particularly during the monsoon season when food prices are typically volatile. However, the overall year-on-year decline suggests that consumers have benefitted from a broader moderation in food prices, particularly staples like potatoes and onions, which fell 30 percent and 36 percent respectively. The mixed price trends indicate that while some elements are squeezing budgets, the overall affordability of basic food items has improved compared to last year, alleviating some degree of financial strain for households.

Looking ahead, the government’s or RBI’s response will likely focus on ensuring stable supply chains to mitigate the seasonal price spikes observed in commodities like tomatoes. Continued monitoring of agricultural outputs and effective management of stock levels could be critical steps. The long-term outlook suggests that if production remains robust and inflationary pressures are kept in check, consumers might continue to experience favorable price trends for essential food items. However, vigilance will be necessary, particularly concerning price movements in fuel and oil, which could offset these gains.
