Russia Commits to Meeting All Energy Supply Agreements with India, Says FM Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that Russia will uphold its energy supply agreements with India amid allegations of external competition. He emphasized the strong foundation of friendship between the two nations, stating there is no conceivable scenario in which their paths would diverge. Lavrov praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognizing him as a highly dynamic leader focused on enhancing India’s sovereignty across various domains, including economy and defense. He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to meeting India’s energy needs, citing the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant as an essential project that continues to fulfill a significant share of India’s energy requirements.
Lavrov highlighted the longstanding cooperation on the Kudankulam project, which began construction in 2002 and currently operates one unit at full capacity, with plans for further development to meet India’s growing energy demands. He committed to ensuring that ongoing energy supplies—including hydrocarbons such as gas, oil, and coal—remain unaffected by external pressures. The Russian minister underscored that Russia has consistently honored its obligations to India and intends to maintain that record moving forward. This steadfast commitment aims to counter any challenges posed by external forces attempting to undermine the cooperative relationship.
During his upcoming visit to India, Lavrov will engage in vital discussions with Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar, focusing on diverse bilateral cooperation areas including trade, logistics, and energy. Significant attention will also be devoted to international issues, particularly in the Middle East, as well as cooperation within platforms like the UN, BRICS, and G20. Lavrov’s remarks reinforced the cultural and humanitarian ties between India and Russia, emphasizing the enduring nature of their relationship amidst external challenges, thereby assuring that their alliance remains robust and trustworthy.
