Rice Exporters Urge Goyal to Address China’s GMO Allegations Impacting Shipments
In March 2026, China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) suspended the licenses of seven Indian rice exporters after alleging that certain consignments contained traces of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Despite prior non-GMO testing and certification processes carried out by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC), these allegations prompted the Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREACG) to seek intervention from the Indian government. TREACG has emphasized the need for a technical review involving both China’s and India’s agricultural authorities to address discrepancies in testing methods and results.
The immediate impact of this suspension is significant for the common citizen and market stakeholders. For rice exporters, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this situation represents a major financial setback. The suspension not only undermines the trust that Indian exporters have with foreign markets but also threatens domestic employment and income tied to agricultural exports. Consumers may not see an immediate effect, but a prolonged issue could lead to higher prices in rice markets due to reduced supply and increased uncertainties surrounding export activities.
Looking ahead, the Indian government, alongside the Ministry of Commerce, will likely pursue diplomatic channels to restore the suspended licenses and re-establish trade relations. Engaging in transparent and scientifically grounded discussions with Chinese authorities is imperative to resolve the technical disputes surrounding GMO testing. In the long term, India’s commitment to enhancing its agricultural export framework, including adherence to international standards, will play a crucial role in mitigating future trade disruptions and ensuring sustainable growth in its agricultural sector.
