Onion Farmers Demand ₹10,000 Crore Revival Package and Stable Export Policy from Government for Sustainable Growth.

The Maharashtra State Onion Growers Farmers Association has urged the central government to announce a ₹10,000 crore revival package for onion farmers facing substantial financial hardship. The call for assistance stems from multiple export restrictions imposed in recent years, fluctuations in domestic pricing due to interventions such as the release of buffer stocks at lower rates, and a series of natural disasters impacting harvests. Farmers have reported significant losses attributed to misguided export policies, unreliable seed quality, and adverse weather conditions, which have collectively placed immense economic strain on the agricultural sector in the state.

This revival package, if approved, has the potential to stabilize the immediate financial situation of farmers and indirectly influence the domestic market for onions, a staple in Indian households. Direct transfers of assistance into farmers’ bank accounts would provide an essential lifeline for many agrarian families, looking to offset losses incurred over the years. Moreover, proposals for subsidies on quality seeds and infrastructure improvements aim to bolster productive capacity and potentially elevate market prices, benefiting consumers as well by ensuring better supply continuity.

In a broader context, the association’s demands highlight the need for a sustainable long-term agricultural policy that includes a stable national onion export framework and the establishment of an independent “National Onion Producers Corporation.” These measures could provide a structured approach to safeguard growers’ interests while supporting the overall rural economy, which plays a critical role in strengthening India’s economic landscape. The government and the RBI may need to consider systemic reforms, including financial support schemes and cooperative development initiatives, to enhance resilience against future price volatility and natural calamities affecting farmers.
