Nepal Government Reaffirms No Ban on Indian Mango Imports Amid Trade Speculation
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued a statement addressing concerns regarding the export of Indian mangoes to Nepal. Official communications indicated that exports are ongoing and have not been disrupted by any trade bans, despite recent media reports suggesting otherwise. Notably, since January 2026, India has successfully exported 2,005 tonnes of mangoes across 149 consignments, with 266 tonnes exported in June 2026 alone. While Nepal has revised its import conditions, including the requirement for Hot Water Treatment (HWT), these changes do not constitute a ban; rather, they are part of the regulatory framework governing phytosanitary measures required for import.
This clarification is crucial for stakeholders and traders involved in the mango export market, as misinformation could lead to unnecessary market panic or disruptions. The appeal to rely on official communications underlines the importance of accurate information in maintaining trade stability. The ongoing exports suggest that demand for Indian mangoes in Nepal remains strong, and adherence to the updated regulatory requirements can provide a consistent flow of trade. The figures reflecting an increase in mango exports from ₹29.64 crore in 2023-24 to ₹43.45 crore in 2024-25 indicate growing market potential, which is beneficial for local farmers and the economy.
Looking ahead, the government aims to address these regulatory changes through diplomatic channels, ensuring that trade relations remain intact and undisturbed. Continued engagement with Nepal on phytosanitary standards in accordance with the WTO SPS Agreement will be essential for preventing future misunderstandings. The Indian agriculture ministry’s proactive stance signifies a commitment to maintaining constructive trade relations while protecting the interests of domestic producers, and it sets a framework for ongoing discussions regarding agricultural import/export regulations in general.
