NCW Initiates Inquiry into Teen’s Murder Linked to Suspected Interfaith Relationship.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated a suo motu inquiry into the gruesome murder of a 15-year-old girl from Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, whose mutilated body was discovered in the Chhapra-Gomti Nagar Express at Gomti Nagar Railway Station in Lucknow. The NCW expressed concerns about the possibility of “honour killing” or “hate crime” as underlying motives for this heinous act. A father, along with his sister and brother-in-law, is alleged to have committed the crime in connection with the victim’s interfaith relationship, which has raised red flags on societal biases against such unions.
In response to the alarming circumstances surrounding the case, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed the Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh to conduct an “immediate, impartial and time-bound investigation.” The commission has requested a detailed action taken report within seven days, emphasizing the need for thorough examination of evidence, including CCTV footage, call detail records, and forensic analysis. The importance of thoroughly investigating any angles related to honour killing or domestic violence was underlined, along with measures to ensure the safety of sensitive family members and witnesses.
The NCW has condemned the brutal nature of the crime, stating that such violence against women is intolerable and warrants strict action against those responsible. Reports indicate that the victim’s body was found dismembered, with her head later located in a pond, underscoring the severity of the act. As police investigations progress, three individuals including the girl’s father have been arrested on charges stemming from suspicions around her interfaith relationship, highlighting the urgent need for societal change regarding such issues.
