Market Wrap: Bharti Airtel, Hindalco, TCS Shine as Top Gainers, While M&M Faces Losses on Nifty and Sensex This Wednesday.
The Indian equity markets experienced a further decline on August 12, impacted by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a notable rise in crude oil prices. The NSE Nifty50 closed at 24,435.95, down 35.75 points, reflecting a loss of 0.15%, while the BSE SENSEX fell by 187.90 points, or 0.24%, to end at 77,966.35. Investor sentiment was particularly strained due to significant selling pressure in stocks associated with the Tata Group, overshadowing some positive movements in selective sectors.
In a mixed performance across the broader market, the Nifty Midcap100 managed a modest gain of 0.28%, while the Nifty Smallcap100 saw a slight decline of 0.18%. Notably, the Nifty PSU Bank index stood out as a strong performer, increasing by 2.05%, along with gains in sectors such as Bank Nifty, Media, Private Bank, Realty, Oil & Gas, and Pharma. Conversely, the Nifty IT index was the largest sectoral laggard, registering a decline of 1.54%, indicative of sector-specific weaknesses that may require further investor scrutiny.
From a technical perspective, the Nifty50 has shown volatility below the 24,400 mark, dipping towards 24,250 before finding some support near the 200-hour simple moving average (SMA). While the index closed above the 20 Exponential Moving Average (EMA), the RSI indicator highlighted a bearish crossover, signaling fragile momentum. Analysts suggest that a sustained fall below the 24,400 level could push the index down to 24,180, whereas the 24,500 mark is anticipated to serve as a critical resistance level. A decisive move above this threshold may signal a potential shift in the current trend.
