Maharashtra Unveils ₹2 Lakh Farm Loan Waiver Scheme to Benefit 56 Lakh Farmers.

The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a new farm loan waiver scheme named the ‘Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karja-mukti Yojana’ aimed at addressing the financial distress faced by farmers. Under this scheme, farmers with crop loan dues of up to Rs 2 lakh will receive complete debt relief. Those with higher dues are offered an one-time settlement option, provided they clear any outstanding amount exceeding Rs 2 lakh, which must be done by March 31, 2027. The scheme is expected to benefit approximately 56 lakh farmers, fulfilling a key pre-poll promise of the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

This initiative is poised to have significant implications for both the agricultural sector and the broader economy. For many farmers, the waiver and settlement provisions will ease immediate financial burdens, enabling them to stabilize their livelihoods. The incentive component of the scheme, offering up to Rs 50,000 for timely loan repayment, may encourage responsible borrowing and fiscal discipline among farmers. In turn, this intention to incentivize prompt repayments is likely to enhance creditworthiness, benefiting agricultural banks and financial institutions by reducing non-performing assets (NPAs) in the sector.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government’s long-term strategy will hinge on effective implementation and monitoring of this loan waiver scheme. The establishment of a high-level committee to oversee the program is a positive step; however, the government must ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries without delays or administrative issues. In response to criticism from opposition parties and farmers’ groups, it remains to be seen if the government will consider expanding the waiver cap or implementing broader relief measures. Continuous engagement with agricultural stakeholders will be crucial to assess the scheme’s impact and make necessary adjustments for future policies that support the farming community in Maharashtra.
