Key Factors Shaping Stock Market Trends on Wednesday: Top 10 Indicators to Watch

The Indian stock market experienced a significant downturn on Tuesday, with both the Sensex and Nifty indices falling by approximately half a percent. The Sensex closed at 78,154 after a decline of over 388 points, while the Nifty 50 ended at 24,472, down by over 112 points. Contributing factors to this decline included rising oil prices and a depreciation of the rupee, which dampened investor sentiment. The mixed performance in the broader market saw the Nifty Midcap 100 index in negative territory, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 managed to stay positive.

Analysts pointed out that the surge in crude oil prices has reignited concerns surrounding inflation, effectively overshadowing a positive earnings backdrop. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, highlighted that geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and developments regarding US-Iran negotiations, have subdued market optimism. Despite the prevailing risk-off sentiment, robust foreign inflows and encouraging corporate performance are serving as buffers against more severe downturns.

Technical indicators suggest that the Nifty 50 has slipped below its recent consolidation range, signaling a waning bullish momentum. Senior Technical Analyst Rupak De from LKP Securities noted immediate support at the 24,400 level, with resistance projected between 24,600 and 24,650. The market’s short-term sentiment will likely remain positive as long as the index sustains above this support level. However, a decisive fall below could trigger further bearish sentiment.

In trading activity, Gland Pharma, Chennai Petro, and HDFC Bank emerged as the most actively traded stocks by turnover, while Vodafone Idea led in volume. Notably, stocks such as Chennai Petro and Gland Pharma witnessed strong buying interest, achieving 52-week highs, whereas companies like KEC International and Balrampur Chini faced notable selling pressure, hitting 52-week lows. Overall, a sentiment meter reflecting 1,487 advances against 1,867 declines indicates a prevailing bearish outlook in the market.
