Keralam Government Leases Land to CSL for Rs 5,000 Crore Ship Block Building Initiative, Announces CM Satheesan.

The Government of Keralam has made a strategic decision to lease 18.16 acres of land to Cochin Shipyard Limited, aimed at facilitating a significant ship block building project with an anticipated investment of approximately Rs 5,000 crore. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the state’s shipbuilding sector and enhancing Kochi’s industrial capabilities. The project, located on an island near Kochi city, is expected to create around 2,000 direct jobs, thereby fostering employment and stimulating economic growth in the region.

This developmental venture not only marks a crucial step for the state’s economy but also establishes a robust revenue stream for the government. The annual lease amount is set at Rs 1.45 crore, which, including GST, will yield a total annual revenue of around Rs 1.70 crore. The decision to expedite this proposal is indicative of the government’s favorable stance towards public sector undertakings (PSUs), particularly given Cochin Shipyard’s status as a Central PSU. This alignment may pave the way for smoother collaboration between public and private sectors in future projects, fostering a conducive environment for substantial investments.

The establishment of a Block Fabrication Facility (BFF) at Cochin Shipyard is anticipated to enhance operational efficiency by enabling the pre-outfitting, painting, and finishing of steel blocks prior to their transportation to the dry dock. This capability will significantly accelerate the ship construction process, unifying fabrication and assembly procedures to minimize delivery timelines. Such advancements could position Cochin Shipyard as a competitive player in the global shipbuilding market, attracting additional investments and catalyzing further technological developments within the industry.
