Kerala Governor’s Policy Address Criticized by Pinarayi Vijayan for Missing Key Suggestions for State’s Advancement.

Pinarayi Vijayan criticized Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar’s policy address, claiming it lacked essential suggestions for the state’s welfare and development. During a press conference following the Governor’s address, he expressed a desire to refrain from harsh criticism given the new government’s early stage but emphasized the need for a more substantive discourse on state issues. He noted that the address did not adequately address the concerns concerning the Union government’s policies and their implications for Kerala’s fiscal health.

Vijayan accused the Governor’s address of reflecting a political submissiveness to the BJP, which he believes undermines Kerala’s interests and could lead to the state forfeiting its rightful entitlements. He pointed out the absence of critical discussions about central policies that threaten fiscal federalism and highlighted the government’s silence on the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin). Such omissions, he argued, are detrimental, as they ignore vital supports that could benefit Kerala’s economy and public sector.

The Leader of the Opposition noted that the increased state share from the 16th Finance Commission was a result of the previous LDF governments’ sustained efforts. He stated that the state’s financial position was in a better state when his government left office, with a cash balance of ₹5,429 crore, which should assist the new administration as it navigates its initial policies. However, without addressing central issues, he contended that the potential gains for the state might be compromised.
