Kerala Cultural Leaders Resist Transition Amidst Government Shift
Heads of cultural institutions in Kerala are resisting pressure to resign following the change in government, despite a mandate from the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) administration. Key positions, such as the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) chairperson held by K. Madhu, remain occupied, leading to speculation about attempts to retain power. While some leaders within the cultural sector have recently stepped down, including Resul Pookutty and Kukku Parameswaran, others are reportedly seeking to extend their tenure.
Minister for Cultural Affairs P.C. Vishnunadh confirmed that most heads of cultural institutions have submitted their resignations, leaving KSFDC’s Madhu as the notable exception. The expectation is that new appointments will be made after discussions with the Chief Minister, based on the alumni of recommendations that have emerged during this period of transition. This situation highlights a departure from previous norms, where political appointees typically resigned promptly after a government shift.
The current reluctance to resign appears to reflect a growing trend among institution heads to maintain their positions despite the customary practice of stepping down. Historical precedents, such as poet K. Satchidanandan’s swift resignation from the Kerala Sahitya Akademi following elections, indicate that this current resistance may signify a significant shift in the political landscape of Kerala’s cultural institutions.
