Japanese Foreign Minister Affirms Quad’s Vital Role, Dismissing Concerns About Its Importance in the Indo-Pacific
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi emphasized the ongoing importance of the Quad framework amid concerns regarding its relevance. He highlighted that ‘Cooperation over Critical Minerals’ would be a primary focus during the upcoming Quadrilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) on May 25, 2026. The initiative underscores the necessity of strategic collaboration in sourcing critical minerals essential for green energy and high-tech industries.
Motegi pointed out Japan’s involvement in critical minerals projects in India but called for enhancements in infrastructure, increased tax subsidies, and stronger protection of intellectual property rights to facilitate these developments. These elements are critical for fostering an environment that encourages investment and sustained collaboration among Quad nations—India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia.
The forthcoming Quad meeting, hosted by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, will also address pressing regional issues, including the conflict in Iran and the blockade in the Hormuz Strait. Additionally, the meeting will serve to set the agenda for the long-awaited Quad Summit, which has been stalled since 2024 due to rising tensions between India and the U.S. on several fronts.
