India’s Venezuelan Oil Imports Set to Soar as Rising Russian Crude Prices Drive Demand.

India’s crude oil imports from Venezuela are set to surge in October, more than doubling to approximately 465,000 barrels per day, the highest level since December 2019. This surge occurs at a time when imports from Russia are declining due to increased prices and geopolitical tensions, particularly following the implementation of new US sanctions. The steep discounts on Venezuelan Merey crude, currently approximately $16 per barrel below ICE Brent, are enticing refiners, notably Reliance Industries Ltd., to pivot away from Russian supplies.

The significant rise in Venezuelan imports can be attributed both to the attractive pricing and the geopolitical landscape that has made Russian oil less viable for Indian refiners. The recent uptick in prices for Russian Urals crude has led to a strategic reduction in imports from that region, which accounted for roughly 35% of India’s crude purchases in September, down from 56% in July. Additionally, the restart of Venezuelan imports in early 2023 is partly due to the easing of US sanctions on the country, enhancing India’s ability to diversify its crude oil sourcing amidst a volatile energy market.

Looking ahead, the outlook for traders and investors is mixed. The influx of Venezuelan barrels may provide short-term price relief due to cost advantages. However, the complexities associated with processing heavy, high-sulfur crude like Merey, alongside potential volatility in shipping costs and tanker rates, could impact refining margins. Retail investors should be cautious, weighing the benefits of lower prices against the operational challenges that may arise from increasing reliance on Venezuelan crude.
