IMD Forecasts Above-Normal Heatwave Days in Various Regions of India This May
Above-normal heatwave days are anticipated in certain regions including the foothills of the Himalayas, the east coast states, Gujarat, and Maharashtra for May 2026, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra emphasized that the minimum temperatures are projected to be above average across various parts of the country during this period.
Conversely, northwest India, several regions in central India, and parts of peninsular and southern northeast India are expected to experience minimum temperatures that hover around normal to slightly below normal. This divergence in temperature patterns highlights the regional climate variability anticipated this summer.
The forecast of extreme heat conditions raises concerns regarding public health and agricultural productivity, necessitating proactive measures from both the government and community organizations to mitigate the impacts of potential heat-related stress. Awareness campaigns and preparedness plans will be crucial in addressing the challenges posed by this weather forecast.
