ICICI Bank Reports 16% Year-on-Year Surge in Net Profit, Reaching Rs 14,805 Crore
ICICI Bank has reported a notable 15.9% increase in net profit for the first quarter, amounting to Rs 14,805 crore compared to Rs 12,768 crore in the same quarter last year. This growth is primarily attributed to a robust expansion in net interest income, which rose by 12.7% year-on-year to Rs 24,384 crore, alongside a substantial 23.5% increase in fee income that reached Rs 7,286 crore. Importantly, non-interest income remained stable, being slightly up from Rs 8,504 crore to Rs 8,547 crore, indicating resilience in revenue diversification. The net interest margin (NIM) has also shown slight improvement, measured at 4.36% compared to 4.34% a year earlier, supported by tax recoveries and enhanced deposit repricing strategies.
In addition to favorable income figures, ICICI Bank has demonstrated strong lending activity; total advances surged 19.6% year-on-year to Rs 16.3 lakh crore, significantly propelled by a 28.2% jump in business banking loans and a remarkable 35.4% increase in rural loan demand. This upward trend in corporate lending predominantly reflects increased requirements for working capital. However, the average current account and savings account (CASA) ratio has declined to 38.1% from 41.2% in the previous year, which may warrant attention as it impacts the cost of funds.
Asset quality metrics exhibit positive trends, with the gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio decreasing to 1.38% from 1.67% year-on-year, and the net NPA ratio also showing improvement to 0.35% from 0.41%. Moreover, the bank’s provisions (excluding tax) saw a considerable reduction from Rs 1,815 crore to Rs 1,260 crore, reflecting effective risk management practices that bolster overall financial health. Exposure to corporate borrowers in lower-rated categories has remained consistent, indicating a cautious lending strategy amidst fluctuating market conditions.
Profit before tax experienced a commendable rise of 13%, reaching Rs 19,126 crore, while the core operating profit grew by 15.6% to Rs 20,235 crore. These results underscore ICICI Bank’s strong operational performance and market positioning, aligning with the overall positive outlook observed in the broader Indian banking sector. Investors may view the first-quarter results as indicative of sustainable growth trends, even as the bank navigates potential market volatility in upcoming periods.
