High-Speed Rail Proposal Unveiled: Technocrat E. Sreedharan Delivers Vision to Kerala’s Chief Minister
Technocrat E. Sreedharan met Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan to discuss a high-speed rail project that could greatly enhance connectivity within the state. While the state government has not released an official statement, sources indicate that it is keenly interested in exploring the proposal. Sreedharan provided a report detailing the project, which is designed to minimize land acquisition through the use of pillars and tunnels rather than traditional embankment methods.
The new proposal offers a significant departure from the previously de-notified semi-high-speed rail project, SilverLine, aligning more closely with the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s objectives. By ensuring that landowners receive their land back after infrastructure is built, this approach is expected to mitigate local opposition and streamline the development process. The plan includes approximately 70% of the corridor being elevated and 20% underground, which could alleviate land-related conflicts.
With an estimated cost of ₹1 lakh crore, the project aims to connect four major airports—Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Karipur, and Kannur—and facilitate trains operating at speeds up to 200 kmph. Travel times would see substantial reductions; for instance, journeys from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi could take around one hour and 20 minutes. Overall, this proposal could transform transportation dynamics in Kerala, subject to further consultations and assessments by the state government.
