Fourth Rail Line Greenlit Along Strategic ‘Chicken’s Neck’ Corridor, Officials Announce
Recent advancements in railway infrastructure in India emphasize the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in strategically critical regions. Approval for a fourth railway line through the ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor—an essential link connecting Northeast India to the rest of the country—marks a significant milestone in this regard. The Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, underscored the importance of the Malda-New Jalpaiguri section, which plays a vital role both for national security and logistical effectiveness in the area, often labeled as a narrow yet crucial corridor.
The ongoing developments include a nearly 29-kilometer double-line underground project, which, along with the fourth rail line, aims to enhance the overall capacity of the corridor. Shrivastava highlighted that this initiative would lead to a major transformation of the rail system, thereby contributing to more organized regional development. Additionally, efforts to double the line in the Barsoi section and expand infrastructure in the Katihar division indicate a proactive approach to meeting the increasing demands of both passenger and freight traffic across these vital routes.
Further demonstrating this commitment, the introduction of 42 new trains and approximately 250 new train stoppages in the past year is designed to improve passenger convenience. The redevelopment of the New Jalpaiguri railway station is also progressing, with planned completion by April 2027. These upgrades not only aim to facilitate better connectivity with border and remote areas but also enhance the overall travel experience for passengers in the Northeast. The completion of 100% electrification of the Northeast Frontier Railway network adds another layer of modernization, indicating an ongoing shift towards sustainable and efficient rail transport.
Future strategies also include extending the Vande Bharat train services beyond Guwahati, aiming to connect Tinsukia and Agartala. This expansion is anticipated to provide faster and more comfortable travel options, enhancing mobility in the region.
