Farmers’ Association Urges Reopening of Sugar Factories in Vizianagaram District to Boost Local Economy.
Farmers from various mandals are calling on the government to take immediate action to reopen sugar factories in the district ahead of the Kharif season, highlighting significant declines in sugarcane cultivation. Major factories in Bhimasingi and Seethanagaram have shut down, while the Sankili sugar factory near Rajam has reduced its crushing activities markedly. This has led to a decrease in sugarcane acreage from a peak of 35,000 acres to only 3,500 acres currently, with predictions of further reductions in the upcoming season.
Loksatta Party State president Bhisetti Babji has formally requested MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas to prioritize the revival of these sugar factories, emphasizing their importance for the livelihoods of numerous residents in Jami, Bobbili, and Seethanagaram. The closure of these facilities not only affects farmers but also endangers the economic stability of the community that heavily relies on sugarcane production.
AP Ruthu Sangham secretary B. Rambabu has urged the government to prioritize farmer interests and encourage a resurgence in sugarcane cultivation within the district. He has called for constructive engagement between government officials, farmers, and public representatives to explore viable solutions for the revival of sugar factories, thereby securing both agricultural sustainability and economic prosperity in the region.
