Crude Oil Futures Drop 3% to ₹7,811/Barrel as Supply Concerns Ease

Crude oil futures experienced a marked decline of 3 percent, settling at ₹7,811 per barrel on Friday. This price movement aligns with weaker global benchmarks as enhanced tanker movements through vital West Asian shipping routes alleviated fears of immediate supply disruptions, even though geopolitical tensions continue to loom. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), crude futures for August delivery fell by ₹226, or 2.81 percent, while September contracts saw a reduction of ₹190, or 2.43 percent, to ₹7,616 per barrel. This selling pressure in domestic futures reflects broader market trends as international prices for Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also witnessed declines of approximately 2 percent.

The primary catalyst for this shift in prices can be attributed to improved oil shipping activities through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which significantly reduced the geopolitical risk premium that has been a persistent concern for traders. According to Kpler shipping data, tanker traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait indicated a robust recovery, with 25 vessels transiting on Thursday, while the Strait of Hormuz saw a steady but limited flow. The increase in traffic follows recent tensions, specifically threats from Yemen’s Houthi forces to blockade Saudi vessels, which had temporarily driven prices above the $100-per-barrel threshold last week. Despite this stabilization, worries remain over global supply chains, particularly following disruptions in Kazakhstan’s key Black Sea export terminal.

In the short term, the outlook for traders and investors leans towards cautious optimism. While the easing of immediate shipping concerns offers some relief, the geopolitical landscape remains fraught with uncertainties that could quickly impact supply dynamics. Analysts suggest that traders should stay vigilant as ongoing geopolitical tensions, such as the proposed international maritime coalition by Saudi Arabia, may influence market sentiment. Furthermore, the disconnect between improving shipping logistics and persistent global tensions indicates potential volatility; traders should consider employing risk management strategies as they navigate this complex environment.
