CPI(M) Finds Hope in Falta Assembly Re-Poll Results Amid Political Challenges.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed optimism following the re-poll results in the Falta assembly constituency, where CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi achieved a significant increase in vote share, securing 19.34% of the total votes, compared to only 4.45% in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The BJP candidate, Debangshu Panda, won decisively with over 1.09 lakh votes, accounting for approximately 71.2% of the votes. This revised performance is being hailed as a resurgence for the CPI(M), with state secretary Md. Salim asserting that the results reflect the party’s growing support among the marginalized populations.

Salim criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC), suggesting that the party is losing ground and described their leadership as being in shock, particularly following the withdrawal of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan from the re-poll just days before the election. Despite this withdrawal, Khan still managed to secure 7,783 votes, indicating continued fragmentation within TMC support. Concurrently, resignations of TMC councillors have become apparent, with significant departures from the Diamond Harbour municipality adding to the narrative of instability within the party.

As discussions unfold regarding the Opposition landscape in West Bengal, the CPI(M) aims to position itself as a viable alternative to both the BJP and the beleaguered TMC. While political analysts caution that it is premature to forecast who will effectively challenge the BJP’s dominance, the internal struggles facing TMC could potentially open avenues for CPI(M) to regain influence. The continuation of political pressures on TMC leaders will play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the Opposition in the forthcoming months.
