Congress Leadership Battle Heats Up: Competing Marches and Poster Campaigns Erupt in a Clash of Ambitions
Supporters of Congress leaders in Kerala are embroiled in a visible power struggle over the Chief Minister’s post, as competing marches and hoardings proliferate in urban centers, particularly surrounding the Congress headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. The factions backing Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala are overtly promoting their respective candidates, despite the high command’s attempts to discourage factional displays. With the AICC set to address leadership questions soon, the atmosphere has become increasingly charged, as rival posters and rallies flood the state, exemplifying a deep-rooted internal conflict.
The rallies, which have spilled into the streets of various districts, showcase the highly polarized support among Congress workers, some of whom have resorted to tearing down opposing candidates’ posters. In Thiruvananthapuram, a significant gathering marched behind a banner backing Satheesan, while similar shows of allegiance were witnessed in Thrissur, Ernakulam, and other regions. This display of factional loyalty highlights a critical juncture for the United Democratic Front, as influential figures from organizations like the Nair Service Society and the SNDP Yogam also weigh in on the leadership debate, adding complexity to the power dynamics within the party.
This internal discord has reached a level of urgency that prompted KPCC president Sunny Joseph to cancel a scheduled press conference, signaling concern from the party’s leadership at both state and national levels. In a bid to quell the unrest, Satheesan called for unity among Congress and UDF supporters, advocating against public demonstrations that could further exacerbate tensions. As opinion leaders voice their preferences, with notable endorsements for both Satheesan and Venugopal, the outcome of this power struggle will significantly influence the framework and credibility of the Congress party in Kerala.
