CJI Surya Kant Criticizes Rising ‘Attacks’ on Judiciary by ‘Parasites’ in Urgent Call for Judicial Integrity.
Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, strongly criticized the rising attacks on the judiciary by various societal elements, including media personnel and RTI activists, while hearing a plea for senior advocate designation. He labeled these attacks as unwarranted and described individuals who engage in such actions as “parasites” lacking a legitimate profession. The remarks came during a session addressing a petition filed by advocate Sanjay Dubey, which sought contempt proceedings against the Delhi High Court for delays related to the Supreme Court’s senior advocate guidelines.
The Bench, which included Justice Joymalya Bagchi, rejected the plea and clarified that the title of senior advocate should not be viewed as a status symbol. The Chief Justice questioned the intent behind seeking this title and stressed its purpose in contributing positively to the justice system. The court also highlighted concerns regarding the petitioner’s public comments on social media, indicating that such behavior goes against the expectations of professionalism in law. The inquiry further illuminated the need for judicial decorum among legal professionals.
During the proceedings, Justice Kant raised alarm over the prevalence of fraudulent law degrees among practicing lawyers, asserting that this grave issue necessitates an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation. He expressed skepticism regarding the Bar Council of India’s capacity to act against such misconduct, citing potential collusion. The discussion culminated with the petitioner expressing regret and seeking to withdraw the plea, a request that the court granted.
