Centre Launches Comprehensive AI Roadmap to Enhance Fisheries Monitoring and Surveillance

The Central Government has announced a comprehensive roadmap that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI), satellite communication, and digital traceability to enhance monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) in the fisheries sector. This initiative, revealed during a regional policy meeting on AI in fisheries held in Mumbai, aims to curtail illegal fishing activities and improve seafood quality. A significant component of this strategy is the expansion of the ReALCraft digital platform, which will facilitate the registration and monitoring of fishing vessels, having already enrolled over 2.25 lakh vessels across various coastal states and Union Territories.

For the common citizen, this initiative signifies an increased effort towards sustainable fishing practices, which directly impacts the availability and quality of seafood products. Improved monitoring could lead to safer and more reliable seafood consumption, as the transformation of the supply chain from catch to consumer is expected. Additionally, the integration of AI could enhance the safety of fishers themselves by providing predictive alerts and personalized advisories, thus fostering a more secure working environment within the fishing community. From a market perspective, the initiative could bolster the fisheries sector’s contribution to GDP by promoting transparency and efficiency while driving foreign investment in technology and infrastructure.

In the long term, the government appears committed to leveraging AI as a cornerstone for sustainable fisheries management, not only in enhancing local practices but also in promoting regional cooperation among Bay of Bengal nations to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This will potentially address governance challenges in monitoring fishing activities effectively. Moving forward, stakeholders are likely to see further integration of digital technologies in fisheries management, which may also include education and training initiatives for small-scale fishers to ensure they benefit from these advancements. The focus on digital traceability and quality assurance will be crucial in meeting both domestic demands and global seafood export standards.
