Cabinet Extends PM-KISAN Scheme Funding Until FY 2031 to Support Farmers Nationwide

The Cabinet has approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for an additional five years, extending its validity until 2030-31 with a total financial outlay of over ₹3.15 lakh crore. This scheme, which has provided financial assistance directly into the bank accounts of eligible landowning farmers since its launch in February 2019, aims to encourage agricultural investment and improve rural economies. As of the latest installment, nearly ₹4.5 lakh crore has been disbursed to over 9 crore farmers, underlining the scheme’s scale and impact.

For the common citizen, particularly those in rural areas, the continuation of PM-KISAN means ongoing support for agricultural investments, which can lead to improved productivity and financial stability. The direct benefit transfer has enabled farmers to make timely purchases of vital inputs like seeds and fertilizers, reducing their dependence on informal credit. Although there have been calls from various farmer organizations to increase the yearly benefit from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000, the government’s refusal to raise the amount may create discontent among beneficiaries, even as the stability of the program serves to bolster the rural economy.

Looking ahead, the commitment to PM-KISAN aligns with the government’s broader economic strategy aimed at strengthening rural households and reducing agricultural risks. While the extension itself signals a reaffirmation of support for farmers, the absence of an increase in benefits raises questions about future fiscal sustainability. The government must balance its objectives between supporting agriculture and managing the economy’s overall health, particularly when considering pressures on non-capital expenditure. Long-term adaptations, including potential adjustments to benefit amounts or additional support measures, may be necessary to meet evolving agricultural needs and ensure sustained economic growth in the rural sector.
