BJP Nominates B.B. Gopakumar as Candidate for Kerala Assembly Speaker Election
The BJP has announced that it will field its candidate, B B Gopakumar, for the Speaker’s post in the Kerala Assembly, marking the first time the party has a candidate for this role. State party president Rajeev Chandrasekhar confirmed that the election for the Speaker will take place on Friday. Gopakumar, a newly elected MLA from the Chathannoor constituency in Kollam district, will have his nomination proposed by Chandrasekhar and fellow MLA V Muraleedharan.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has put forward veteran leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan as its candidate, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has yet to announce its nominee for the Speaker’s election. The presence of a BJP candidate in this election represents a significant shift in Kerala’s political landscape, as the party has historically been underrepresented in the state assembly.
The significance of this election is further emphasized by the BJP’s newly achieved status, with three MLAs now holding seats in the Kerala Assembly, including Gopakumar, Muraleedharan, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Prior to taking their oaths, the BJP MLAs also paid floral tributes at the Palayam Martyrs’ Memorial, highlighting a commitment to engage with the state’s political heritage even as they strive to establish their presence within it.
