The apparel and readymade garment industry in Tamil Nadu is urging the state government to accelerate the development of affordable rental housing projects specifically for garment workers. A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council, highlighted the critical need for adequate housing to sustain the growth of the labor-intensive textile sector. With the Tiruppur knitwear cluster employing over 10 lakh workers—65% of whom are women—the industry’s expansion is closely linked to ensuring safe and affordable accommodation facilities. The appeal includes a request for a 50% capital subsidy for constructing worker hostels and reclassification under residential electricity tariffs to enhance affordability.
