Government Appoints Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani (Retd) as New Chief of Defence Staff

Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani (Retd.) has been appointed as the next Chief of Defence Staff of India, effective after the tenure of General Anil Chauhan on May 30, 2026. In addition to this role, he will serve as Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs, highlighting the government’s faith in his leadership abilities for overseeing military strategy and administration.

Currently serving as the Military Adviser within the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025, Lt Gen Subramani brings a wealth of experience to the position. His career includes extensive service across various conflicts and diverse terrains, which enhances his understanding of complex military operations and challenges on both a strategic and operational level.

Having held numerous Command, Staff, and Instructional posts throughout his career, Lt Gen Subramani is recognized for his exemplary service, evidenced by various honors including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. His appointment is expected to reinforce the leadership framework of India’s defense forces, focusing on enhancing military readiness and national security initiatives.
