Ponna Kaluva Utsavam Celebrated with Grandeur and Devotion in The Hindu Tradition
‘Ponna Kaluva Utsavam’ was celebrated by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on Friday, marking a traditional summer retreat for Lord Govindaraja and His consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi. The festival, held on ‘Chitra Pournami’, involved a grand procession carrying the deities to Ponna Kaluva, situated 5 km from the temple, despite the harsh summer heat. This annual ritual emphasizes the cultural significance of ancient traditions in providing spiritual recognition to the deities during the summer months.
The processional event included priests who conducted a celestial bath for the deities within a Mandapam filled with water, using an assortment of aromatic products. This ceremonial bathing not only symbolizes purification but also serves to honor the deities in a festive atmosphere. To mitigate the heat during the ritual, Vettiver mats were strategically placed around the Mandapam, enhancing the comfort of the deities and participants alike.
Local devotees from Tiruchanur actively participated in this auspicious occasion, showcasing community engagement in cultural and religious practices. The event reinforces the deep-rooted traditions that form the backbone of local religious observances in Tirupati, emphasizing both the devotion of the attendees and the importance of preserving such rituals for future generations.
