FSSAI Implements Ban on Plastic and Foil Packaging for Pan Masala to Enhance Food Safety.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently implemented significant changes to its packaging regulations, particularly targeting the popular product pan masala. Under the newly established Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2026, the use of plastic and foil packaging for pan masala has been strictly prohibited. The authority aims to promote sustainable practices by mandating that pan masala must be sold exclusively in packaging made from eco-friendly materials or traditional rigid containers. This strategic move aligns with broader national efforts to enhance food safety and minimize environmental impact.

The approved packaging materials encompass paper, paperboard, cellulose, and other naturally derived options, all of which are required to be free from any plastic content, including commonly used types like polyethylene and PVC. Moreover, tin and glass containers have been authorized as viable alternatives. This marked shift in policy is part of an overarching commitment to address the escalating concern over plastic waste, which has prompted the FSSAI to invoke earlier established provisions under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016. These regulations have already seen the banning of plastic sachets for gutkha, tobacco, and pan masala, reinforcing a concerted effort to reduce plastic usage across various sectors.

This amendment not only enhances consumer protection by ensuring safer packaging but also signals a more comprehensive governmental approach to environmental stewardship.
