SBI Shares Surge 4% as Q1 Profit Soars 10% Year-on-Year, Outpacing Analyst Estimates.
Investors demonstrated a robust purchasing sentiment towards State Bank of India (SBI) shares following the bank’s announcement of its first-quarter results for FY27. On August 7, the stock surged by 3.50%, reaching an intraday high of Rs 1,123 on the NSE. Despite this gain, it remains approximately 9% below its recent 52-week peak of Rs 1,234.7 achieved on February 24, 2026. At 2:07 PM, shares were priced at Rs 1,112.70, reflecting a 2.6% rise from the previous day’s closing. In contrast, the benchmark NSE Nifty50 index exhibited a decline of 0.42%, indicating a divergence in performance between the bank’s stock and broader market trends.
The financial results reported by SBI were notably positive, with a standalone net profit of Rs 21,121 crore for Q1, marking a commendable 10% year-on-year growth. Not only did this figure exceed market expectations, estimated at Rs 19,052 crore, but it also represented an increase from the Rs 19,160 crore recorded in the same quarter last year. Additionally, the net interest income (NII) experienced a substantial 15% YoY growth, reaching Rs 46,992 crore, outpacing analysts’ forecasts of Rs 46,214 crore. The operational performance was solid, with operating profit up by 10% YoY to Rs 33,529 crore, reinforcing investor confidence in the bank’s profitability trajectory.
Further reinforcing these positive results, SBI reported an improvement in its net interest margins (NIM), with domestic NIM rising to 3%, an increase of 7 basis points from the previous quarter, and a whole bank NIM of 2.86%, up by 5 basis points sequentially. The bank also crossed a significant milestone, with total business surpassing Rs 110 trillion, driven by deposits exceeding Rs 60 trillion and advances surpassing Rs 50 trillion. The growth trajectory for advances remained robust, with a year-on-year increase of 19% for the whole bank, and domestic advances growing by 18.15%. Notably, all segments of retail, agriculture, SME, and corporate loans recorded double-digit growth, showcasing SBI’s diverse lending portfolio and market strength.
