Wind Energy Tenders Outpace Solar for the First Time in Q1 FY27

During the April-June quarter of FY27, India witnessed a significant shift in its clean energy procurement strategy, as wind power tenders surpassed standalone solar power tenders for the first time, according to the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA). A total of 9.34 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity was tendered in this quarter, with battery energy storage systems (BESS) leading at 3.48 GW, followed by wind power at 2.35 GW and solar at 1.34 GW. This evolution indicates a growing focus on the reliability and dispatchability of clean energy, rather than merely increasing capacity.

This shift in tender priorities has significant implications for the common citizen and the market. For consumers, a greater reliance on wind and storage solutions can lead to a more stable and reliable electricity supply, which is essential for homes and businesses. On the market side, companies involved in wind and energy storage technologies may see increased opportunities and investment, potentially leading to job creation and economic growth in these sectors. As the emphasis moves towards dependable energy, stakeholders in the renewable energy market are likely to adapt their strategies to align with this new focus.

Looking ahead, long-term policy support from the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will be critical in maintaining this momentum. Continuous and timely tender issuance, along with expedited project executions, will be essential in achieving India’s ambitious clean energy targets and net-zero emissions goals. The integration of wind and battery storage represents not just a transitional phase but a foundational change in how India approaches renewable energy, emphasizing reliability alongside capacity. This evolution will require sustained commitment from policymakers to ensure a resilient clean energy ecosystem is established.
