Cardamom Exports Suffer Aroma Loss Amidst Soaring Prices
India’s cardamom exports are currently facing subdued overseas demand, primarily due to a significant rise in domestic prices rather than a decrease in consumer consumption. Exporters report a shift in buyer behavior, with importers opting for smaller, more frequent purchases while monitoring the monsoon’s effects on the upcoming crop. Currently, cardamom prices range between ₹3,000 and ₹3,300 per kg, higher than the previous range of ₹2,700 to ₹2,900. The market is witnessing hesitation in price negotiations, and many buyers are delaying large orders until clearer price trends can be assessed, particularly in light of the recent sharp rise in cardamom prices.
This situation has implications for both consumers and the market at large. For the common citizen, higher market prices mean increased costs for cardamom in retail settings, leading to shifts in buying behavior towards smaller pack sizes. The decline in export inquiries might dampen earnings for producers, which could, in turn, lead to tighter domestic supply if foreign markets are not engaged. Such dynamics could exacerbate inflationary pressures on a staple spice that holds cultural significance and utility in various culinary and medicinal applications.
Looking forward, the long-term outlook for cardamom exports is influenced heavily by climate conditions and the subsequent crop yield. The anticipated crop has already been revised downward from an initial estimate of 40,000 tonnes to about 33,000 tonnes due to adverse weather conditions and pest infestations. With the El Niño phenomenon poised to potentially affect forthcoming monsoons, there is a generalized concern regarding both production and prices for the upcoming seasons. As such, immediate governmental or RBI actions may focus on mitigating the adverse effects through agricultural support programs and monitoring market conditions more closely to stabilize prices in both domestic and export markets.
