Crude Oil Prices in Flux: Market Direction Remains Uncertain

Oil prices experienced a significant reversal last week, effectively ending a three-week rally. Brent crude oil futures on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) closed at $87.90 per barrel, representing a loss of 9.1%, while domestic crude oil futures decreased by 5.7% to ₹8,113 per barrel. The week opened with Brent futures witnessing a pronounced gap-down, subsequently dropping further before stabilizing. While the price has found support above the critical level of $84.75, where both the 21- and 50-day moving averages intersect, the bearish sentiment has largely dictated market movement, keeping a full recovery at bay.

Multiple factors contribute to this downward trend. Declining demand projections, influenced by a slowdown in key economies, have exacerbated concerns over global oil consumption. Geopolitical tensions surrounding oil-rich regions, coupled with OPEC+ production strategies, have also contributed to market volatility. Despite prices holding above pivotal support levels, prevailing economic uncertainties are leading traders to adopt a cautious stance, thereby limiting upward momentum for crude oil prices in the short term.

Looking ahead, the outlook remains uncertain for both traders and investors. Should Brent crude maintain its position above $84.75, a potential rally toward $97 might occur, with the possibility of testing the $100 mark if upward momentum builds. Conversely, a breach below $84.75 could trigger a retreat to $75. For domestic futures, sustained trading above ₹8,000 may indicate potential recovery to ₹9,000, yet falling below ₹7,500 could catalyze a bearish outlook, pushing prices down to ₹7,000 and potentially to ₹6,500. In this volatile environment, a cautious trading strategy is advisable, especially for those considering short positions if key support levels are violated.
