Quad Foreign Ministers Emphasize Indo-Pacific as Key Engine for Global Growth, Says Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for the Indo-Pacific to be a catalyst for global growth and stability during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26, 2026. He called for “trusted and transparent” partnerships aimed at ensuring maritime security and economic options in the region. The meeting included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, all addressing concerns over China’s increasing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.
Jaishankar underscored specific challenges such as supply chain resilience, connectivity issues, and gaps in critical infrastructure. He posited that addressing these challenges necessitates forming stronger partnerships and enhancing strategic confidence. The minister highlighted that the Quad’s focus remains squarely on the Indo-Pacific, reinforcing the idea that collaboration among “maritime democracies” is essential for maintaining a free and open region.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong reiterated the commitment to strengthening the Quad, advocating for its role in achieving a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific. Rubio added that the Quad’s collaborative efforts are increasingly relevant given global events, positioning the alliance to tackle critical issues like energy security and freedom of navigation. The consensus among the ministers suggests a unified approach to ensuring regional stability through cooperative initiatives.
